When we arrived we quickly surveyed the pier and climbed up to the remains of an old Coastguard station. The station was built prior to 1813 and with the outbreak of the War of Independence in 1920, the I.R.A. (Irish Republican Army) attacked the station, killing one coastguard. The Free State Army arrested a number of local people in relation to the attack and in retaliation, the local I.R.A burned down the coastguard station leaving the ruins which you see today.
